Featherweight booms

Featherweight Aluminum Booms

The latest innovation in aluminum spray boom technology!

In development for nearly two years, WILSCOT, LLC is proud to introduce the Featherweight turf boom. Lightweight and durable, the Featherweight’s patented design incorporates features not found on other turf booms. One look and you’ll understand what the excitement is all about.

Motivations

When interviewed about the need for a long boom, the superintendents’ response of “No, not interested” was unanimous! The concern was for turf damage, primarily on greens, was the driving reason.

The question was changed. When a combination boom of 20’ for greens applications that could be folded out to 30’ for fairways was suggested, the response was far more positive, “Yes that might work”.

So what changed theses superintendents’ perceptions?

Time Saving Potential

  1. An 18’ or 20’ boom is widely accepted for spraying greens. If the greens were less undulating, then the ability to fold out the booms to 30’ meant less time and fewer passes.
  2. On fairways, the time saving between a 6 yard boom and a 10 yard boom were obvious providing there was consideration to avoid ground strikes.

Spray Area Width (yd) 6 7 10 15 20 25 30 40
Boom width (ft) Spraying Passes
18' 1 2 2 3 4 5 5 7
28' 1 1 2 2 3 3 4 5
Fewer passes over 18' boom 0 1 0 1 1 2 1 2
30' 1 1 1 2 2 3 3 4
Fewer passes over 18' boom 0 1 1 1 2 2 2 3

WILSCOT, LLC ran with this interest resulting in the Featherweight aluminum “combo” boom options of an 18’/28.3’ with a 3-nozzle center section, and of a 20’/30’ with a 4-nozzle center section.

More efficient spraying, chemical savings, drift control, improved coverage and ease of operation with Integrated Sprayer Technologies Options:

With a broad experience in sprayer technology, WILSCOT, LLC expanded on the larger boom value by coupling the Featherweight combo boom with advanced sprayer technology options including:

  • “Automatic Tip Changing” Technology via CAPSTAN Turf Divsion PWM spray technology. (GPS technology NOT required)
  • Dry or Wet boom plumbing options by WILGER, INC
  • Technology upgrades on all brands of sprayers with the various flow control technologies:
    • Original “Speed and Pressure” control
    • Standard 3 or 5 section Rate Controllers
    • GPS Rate Controllers with over 10 sections with Individual Nozzle Control and Turn Compensation
  • Retrofit capability to any Jacobsen, Deere or Toro self-propelled sprayers.

Functionality

  1. The Featherweight boom retrofit to existing Jacobsen, Deere and Toro center sections
  2. Two additional operator switches control outer wing sections
  3. The outer wings fold over the top of the inner wing and rest in boom cradles. The booms fold in the same manner as their host machines.
  4. The Featherweight boom features left and right boom break-aways that break “back and up” or “forward and up”

Quality Features

Durable by Design

  • Closed triangular cross-section design:
    • Allows for superior torsion and bending loads strength
    • Minimizes potential for twisting and “gull-wing” drooping
    • Provides a “wire routing cavity” for a clean, professional look and damage protection.
  • 3-Piece overlapping riveted panels:
    • Eliminates fatigue crack-inducing welds
    • Large radii minimizes concentrated stress loads
    • Reinforced corners protect against boom strikes
  • Structural reinforced boom ribs:
  • Steel reinforced bolted joints for robust performance for both inner and outer boom wings
  • Nozzle and boom plumbing located inside the triangular cross-section
  • 12V electric/hydraulic inner wing racking cylinders
  • 12V electric outer wing fold cylinders

Reduced weight, compared to steel booms, for a lighter footprint

  • 18’ and 20’ single booms - just 18lbs per side
  • 18’/28.3' and 20’/30’ combo booms - 52lbs per side

Versatility

  • Modular boom section for simple replacement
  • Dry or Wet WILGER QuickNut boom plumbing options
  • Wilger turret; 3-way nozzle bodies; standard or PWM sized tips
  • More Boom Width Options:
  1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9
Boom width (ft) w/3-nozzle center section 5' 7' 12' 12' 12' 17' 18' 23' 28'

The unique overlapping, multi-panel, truss construction, incorporating the use of positioning rivets and high quality structural acrylic adhesives, not only eliminates the potential for fatigue cracking, but provides for a strong and durable structure. Featherweight booms come standard with breakaway hinges, providing protection against catastrophic failure from inadvertent “strikes”.

Definitions

SharpShooter PWM Tip Management:

Description: An “automatic tip changer” that permits a wider range of speeds and rates at a constant pressure and constant droplet size. Typically used with 18’, 20’ and 21’ booms

Values: Significant spraying time savings, immediate ON/OFF spray control at the correct rate and pressure, On-the-Go Drift control, no tip changes required. Individual nozzle overlap control equal to the number – 3 and 4 manual; and up to 10 with the addition of GPS - of rate controller boom sections.

NOTE: SharpShooter does not require GPS for manual section control. SharpShooter with automatic section control DOES require GPS. Will work with either WAAS based GPS or RTK based GPS systems.
